A prosthesis is an artificial replacement for part or all of a limb. It helps people who have undergone an amputation regain mobility and function in everyday life.
As a patient, you will discuss your concerns, goals and plans for life after surgery with your prosthetist. We recommend maintaining close contact with your doctor and rehabilitation team both before and after the operation.
Some patients meet with their prosthetist several times a week, particularly if they are newly amputated, experience changes in their residual limb that affect socket fit, or encounter issues with the prosthesis itself.
The residual limb changes over time, which may require adjustments or the fabrication of a new prosthetic socket. Natural changes in limb volume, activity level or overall health can affect how the prosthesis fits. Since proper fit is essential for both comfort and safety, a new custom-made socket may be required when needed.
